Digital Copy |
A copy of your story and illustrations
saved in a digital format on a Computer Disk.
Text can be typed into and saved in a
word processing program (like Word, Wordpad or Notepad).
Illustrations or photos can be scanned into the computer, using a
scanner, and saved as TIF or JPG files.
|
|
Editing |
To prepare written
material for printing, publishing or presentation. This involves
correcting, spell checking and other revisions. Plummer Printing does not edit the manuscripts it prints. All text
and illustration should be submitted exactly as the author wants
them to appear in the book.
|
|
Hardcopy |
A copy of your story and
illustrations/photos in paper format. That is, printed out on pieces
of paper.
Submitting a story to Plummer Printing as a hardcopy can subject you
to a data entry fee as your story will have to be retyped into our
computer program. If pictures or illustrations are sent as
hardcopies, do not send originals. Make color photocopies at your
local office supply store.

Layout (Book) |
A book layout is
the page-by-page design of how the inside of a book (text, pictures
and Illustrations) is arranged.
Layouts can be accomplished digitally through programs like
PageMaker, allowing the user to place the text and illustrations on
each page. Or sketches can be made to indicate placement of
pictures, text, margins and other elements.
A layout sketch can be as simple as drawing a rectangle and dividing
it in half to indicate facing pages inside a book. Inside that
rectangle, boxes can be drawn and labeled to indicate pictures and
text can be indicated with straight lines or written out.
When Plummer Printing
refers to making a layout (or setting up a book), they mean taking
the already created layout design of the author and transferring it
to their computers.

Perfect Bound
(Binding) |
A binding method most commonly used on Paperback novels where the
inside pages are attached to the cover spine directly with a
flexible glue.
Plummer Printing uses perfect binding and saddle-stitch binding.
|
|
Printer |
Someone whose
occupation is printing.
A printer, like Plummer Printing, is hired by an author or other
individual. A printer only puts the words and pictures of the
individual on paper and binds them into a book. For promotion,
distribution or sales, a publisher is needed.
|
|
Publisher |
One who publishes,
or prepares and issues printed material for public distribution and
sales. A publisher will pay an author for their story, then they will send
it to their own printers for printing. They will promote the book
and then distribute it to stores for public purchase. Plummer
Printing is not a publisher.

|
Resolution
(Picture) |
The degree of
sharpness of a computer-generated image as measured by the number of
dots per inch in a hard-copy or the number of pixels on a display
screen.
Plummer Printing recommends a picture resolution of no less than 300
dpi (dots per inch). Most programs and scanners will have a box
where Resolution can be typed in at the time of scanning.
|
|
Saddle-Stitch
(Binding) |
A binding method
where folded sheets of paper are made into a book by stapling or
stitching down the spine.
Many children's books
and almost all magazines use this type of binding.
Plummer Printing uses perfect binding and saddle-stitch binding.

Setup (Book) |
Details of a book
setup can vary from printer to printer.
At Plummer Printing we refer to setup as inputting your completely
finished text and illustrations into our computer using a layout
design that you have already created. (Either in digital format or
sketched on paper).
Setup for Plummer Printing does not include layout creation or
editing of text.
